Obituary: Maureen Thompson (nee Kearns)

The University is saddened to learn of the passing of Maureen Thompson (nee Kearns).  On behalf of Maureen’s friends and colleagues, Steve Bickerstaff of the Liverpool Doctoral College, has provided this tribute:

The Student Administration and Support Team is deeply saddened to report the death of their friend and colleague, Maureen Thompson (nee Kearns) who passed away on Saturday 25th April following a long illness.

Maureen started working at the University in 1991 and had been in her role in the Liverpool Doctoral College Student Administration Team since 2002.  Maureen was well-known around the University, hugely popular, a key member of the department and became a lifelong friend to many colleagues. Well respected and professional, Maureen was seen by many as the oracle when it came to matters concerning Post Graduate Research students. Maureen was always willing to help colleagues, and her commitment to students was second to none.

Maureen was known to many of her friends as ‘Mozz’, her positive and determined approach to life was infectious and never dimmed. Maureen had battled illness for some time, but never wanted to be defined by her illness.

Over the past few days we have shared many stories of her kindness, good humour and we will all remember how glamorous she looked. She will be sadly missed.

Colleagues will want to celebrate Maureen’s life and we will be looking to make arrangements appropriate with her family’s wishes.

Maureen was devoted to her family and our thoughts are with her husband, Leigh, and family at this sad time.

Maureen’s husband has provided the following information about her funeral.

Cremation will be held at Anfield Crematorium on Monday 18th May 2020 at 12.40pm. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, the service is limited to family and close friends only.

Family flowers only – donations to Cancer Research UK via the family.
