Liverpool’s culture and heritage are at the heart of the city, and there is still lots to see and do despite the COVID-19 restrictions. We’ve rounded up five FREE experiences that are completely unique to the city.
1. Street Art Tour
Liverpool has always been a go-to destination for art-lovers. From the Tate Liverpool to the Walker Art Gallery, there are loads of opportunities to view some great art all across the city.
But increasingly, you don’t have to go inside at all to see some incredible art. It’s just as easy to get your culture-fix by walking around Liverpool and looking out for the amazing street art that is all around. Read this Street Art in Liverpool blog post to find out more.
2. The Bluecoat Art Gallery
The Bluecoat is the oldest building in central Liverpool, and was also the first arts centre in the UK. It is now Liverpool’s creative hub, showcasing talent across visual art, music, dance, live art, and literature. Entry to the gallery is free, although it is recommended that you pre-book as numbers are currently being limited to ensure social distancing. Book your ticket here.
3. Another Place, Crosby Beach
Another Place is a piece of modern sculpture by Sir Antony Gormley located at Crosby Beach, just a few miles from Liverpool city centre. Another Place consists of 100 cast-iron, life-size figures spread out along three kilometres of the beach, and stretching almost one kilometre out to sea.
The figures – each one weighing 650 kilos – are made from casts of the artist’s own body, and stand on the beach looking out to sea and the views of Wirral and the North Wales hills. If you visit at the right time you can also see some of the finest sunsets in the country.
4. International Slavery Museum
The International Slavery Museum is the only one of its kind in the UK to look at the history of transatlantic slavery and its legacies. Located within Liverpool’s Royal Albert Dock and sharing a building with the Merseyside Maritime Museum, you will hear the untold stories of enslaved people and learn about historical and contemporary slavery – expect to be taken on a thought-provoking and moving explorative journey.
5. Liverpool’s Parks
Liverpool is blessed with many beautiful parks and green spaces. If you feel like getting out into the fresh air and spending an afternoon chilling in a park then you’re spoiled for choice.
The city’s collection of Victorian parks are regarded by many as the most important in the country, and with two Grade I and five Grade II* parks, we have more than any other UK city except London. Alongside these grand parks you’ll find many smaller green spaces that offer the perfect place to take some time out and get away from it all.
So, grab a picnic, football, maybe a kite or a frisbee, and head out into one of our amazing green spaces for a bit of fresh air and a great day out.
