Professor Enitan Carrol appointed Clinical Director of NIHR regional research network

Professor Enitan Carrol has been appointed to the position of Clinical Director of the National Institute for Health Research’s Clinical Research Network in the North West Coast (CRN NWC).

The CRN NWC is part of a national network that supports patients, the public and healthcare organisations across England to participate in high-quality research, advancing knowledge and improving care.

Enitan is a Professor of Paediatric Infection at the University of Liverpool and Honorary Consultant in Paediatric Infectious Diseases and Immunology at Alder Hey Children’s NHS Foundation Trust. Her career to date covers experimental medicine, clinical trials and implementation science and spans the full translational spectrum from innovation to applied health. Enitan is also Chief Investigator on the DETECT study (Dynamic Electronic Tracking and Escalation to reduce Critical Care Transfers) and currently leads the Research Scholars Programme for the Network.

Professor Carrol takes up her role on Monday 2 November and commented: “I am delighted and honoured to take on the role of Clinical Director of the Clinical Research Network: North West Coast. I cannot think of a more challenging time to take on such a role, but I believe that with the COVID-19 pandemic, the Network has demonstrated a strong performance in Urgent Public Health (UPH) and COVID-19 vaccine studies.

“My ambition is to lead the Network to the next level in innovation, quality and impact on local health needs. Partnerships are crucial to the Network achieving our objectives and I look forward to working with stakeholders across the North West Coast footprint. Together we are stronger, and together, we can address multi-morbidity and health inequalities to improve outcomes for our populations. My career to date has equipped me with the skills, partnerships and track record to deliver on this quest, and I embrace the challenge with passion, energy and dynamism.”

The CRN NWC is hosted by Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and the Trust’s Chief Executive, Steve Warbuton, congratulated Professor Carrol and commented: “Enitan is an exceptional research leader who is passionate about building research capacity with undergraduates, trainees and NHS senior clinicians. Recently this passion has been demonstrated in Enitan’s delivery of the North West Coast Research Scholars Programme which is creating tomorrow’s research leader and will increase the amount of high quality research taking place in our region. I am in no doubt that she will inspire those around her and elevate the Network to the next level of performance.”
