The University’s Faculty of Science and Engineering has released a report outlining six broad areas of civic engagement where the Faculty is working to make a difference to peoples’ lives in Liverpool City Region, the North West and beyond.
The Faculty plays host to some of the University’s key innovation assets including the Materials Innovation Factory, Digital Innovation Facility, Virtual Engineering Centre and the Stephenson Institute for Renewable Energy and its researchers interact with companies of all sizes from multinationals to SMEs.
Among other topics, the report details work with local civic and government organisations to inform public policy in areas such as planning and climate change, partnerships with local cultural organisations in developing public awareness of major societal challenges, and how the Faculty is developing students’ employability skills so that they can make an immediate impact upon graduation.

The report will launch with an online event on Wednesday 18th November as part of Liverpool Responds, the University’s fortnightly online event series considering different aspects of the COVID-19 pandemic, its response and the sectors affected by it.
Faculty colleagues from different disciplines will come together to explain how a range of programmes and partnerships are:
- Boosting regional skills and innovation.
- Mobilising support for the emerging phases of COVID-19 and in the longer term contributing to recovery.
- Engaging communities and influencing public policy.
Chaired by Professor Ronan McGrath who led on the report, the panel included Alex Singleton (Professor of Geographic Information Science), Dr Raechelle D’Sa (Senior Lecturer in Antimicrobial Biomaterials), Professor Matt Reed (Strategy Director, Materials Innovation Factory) and Iwan Williams (Employability Business Partner, Faculty of Science and Engineering).
