Self-care series: keeping active for your overall wellbeing

Keeping active during lockdown is as important for your physical health as it is for your mental wellbeing. With most of us living, working and studying under one roof, disconnecting from these different aspects of our lives can be tricky.

So, we have put together a few ideas to help you keep active, get outdoors, and better manage your wellbeing:

Stay active with Sport Liverpool online

In line with national restrictions our University sports facilities are now closed and all face to face student club and campus sports programmes have stopped until further notice.

In the meantime, please continue to access our online resources including our virtual, on-demand service, Wellbeats. Ideal if you need a little inspiration and support for your home workout.

Get outdoors

Take a stroll around one of Liverpool’s open spaces. From parks to beaches, promenades and waterfronts, there’s so many places to safely head to on your own or with your housemates. Don’t fancy walking? Here’s some handy cycle routes.

Try a new walking or jogging route

Bored of walking the same loop from your front door every day? Take a look through these 1, 2.5 and 5k routes around campus and Greenbank. Routes will be changed regularly, so make sure to follow @livunigym for updates.

Mindful walking

With many people working from home at the moment, our cities and towns are quieter than usual. You could use this opportunity to rethink your daily walk, and incorporate mindfulness along the way.

Mindful walking allows us to focus our thoughts which so often become distracted or even stuck when the mind is left to its own devices. Whether walking on a city street or through a park, it is an opportunity to guide ourselves out of the autopilot we live in throughout so much of our day, or from any distractions apart from the here and now.

Mindful.org have put together this handy step-by-step guide.

Give meditation a go

Join the Meditation Society as they introduce you to the simple practices of mindfulness and become your own Queen or King of Calm. Save your place at this introductory session on 8 February: https://liverpoolguild.native.fm/ (search ‘meditation’).

If you would rather try in your own time, take a look at this NHS bedtime meditation guide.
