Get to know Canvas over the spring break

Spring has officially sprung and during the current break we recommend you have a go at getting to know Canvas.

Getting ready to switch

Canvas will replace VITAL, becoming your new virtual learning environment from 1 August 2021.

The good news is that the majority of learning content associated with all of your VITAL modules – such as lecture notes and videos – will be automatically copied over into Canvas.

However, you will need to download and save your:

– Turnitin assignments and feedback

– Blackboard assignments and feedback

– Discussion boards and threads

– Blackboard quizzes

– Additional information such as your campus pack

It is important that you do this before 31 July as this is the last day you will be able to access VITAL. You’ll find tips and advice on how to download and save these items online. Plus, you can contact Service Desk if you need any help too.

Exploring Canvas

Many of you will already be using Canvas, but if you are new to the virtual learning environment and don’t know where to start, there are lots of resources available to help you. All students have access to the ‘Help for Students’ Canvas course. By looking through the available modules, you will receive a simple run through on how to find your way around Canvas.

You can also explore some of the unique Canvas features, including:

– Video editing and uploading software Canvas Studio

– ‘Canvas on the move’ with the free Canvas Student App – available from the Android Play Store, or the Apple Appstore. Simply search for ‘Canvas’ and look for the Canvas icon.

You can also access expert advice and support on using Canvas 24/7, 365-days-a-year by phone, email and online chat. It’s really easy to access this support. Simply log onto to Canvas, click on the ‘Help’ icon on the left-hand tool bar, and then choose your preferred way of asking for advice.

Introducing your Canvas Coaches

Over the coming weeks the team of Canvas Coaches will be talking about what they love about the new virtual learning environment and why they think you’ll love it too. Canvas Coaches are all current students or recent graduates so they have experience of using both VITAL and Canvas.

Here’s some of the reasons Tanya Jasulai, a new member to the Canvas Coach team, loves Canvas: “It may sound really simple but being able to directly export, watch learning materials, connect with tutors and classmates, receive notifications, access Reading Lists, quizzes, and assignments provides a greater leeway in studying methods.”

If you are using Canvas, why not tell us what you like about your new virtual learning environment on Twitter, using #LivUniCanvas.
