Virtual visit to University by Universities Minister Michelle Donelan MP

The Minister of State for Universities the Rt Hon Michelle Donelan MP paid a virtual visit to the University last week to discuss how the University was supporting the success of students, the region, and the wider economy, in the context of COVID-19.

The Minister had the opportunity to meet with colleagues to discuss how our research could more readily link in with our commitment to supporting great graduate jobs.  As part of the discussion the Minister heard how the University’s graduate employability programmes are improving employment prospects for local graduates whilst also providing the skills that local employers need.

Alongside meeting with staff, the Minister met with a group of students to reflect on their time at the University.   During her visit the group of students were able to talk to the Minister about plans for student returns in September and their experiences of online learning amongst other topics.

As part of the University’s commitment to providing life changing opportunities the Minister spoke to colleagues working in access, widening participation, and student support, on lessons learned during COVID-19.  The commitment to helping students get in and get on was welcomed by the Minister with further commitment to working together on this important work.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Dame Janet Beer said: “It was a pleasure to welcome Minister of State for Universities Michelle Donelan for a virtual visit to the University today.  We are proud of our record in supporting the academic, personal, and future success of our students, and I am grateful the Minister took the time to meet with colleagues working across these areas.

“Equally, I know the Minister enjoyed the opportunity to meet with our students who shared their experiences on their time in Liverpool.  As we prepare for the next academic year I look forward to further discussions with the Minister and her team on our shared ambitions for providing ever greater support and opportunity for our students.”

Universities Minister Michelle Donelan MP said: “I was delighted to speak directly with students and staff at the University of Liverpool about the resilience and determination they have shown throughout this pandemic.

“Ensuring that students are getting excellent teaching on courses that give them the knowledge and skills they need to pursue a meaningful career is vital as we build back better from the pandemic.

“It was especially great to see the work the University is doing to help their graduates successfully enter the jobs market, and I encourage all universities to follow their lead.”
