University engineers feature in a photography exhibition in Liverpool ONE that celebrates the heroic efforts of the people of Liverpool throughout the pandemic.
The `Covid 19: Liverpool’s Journey’ showcases Liverpool’s journey throughout the pandemic including the efforts of local frontline workers, the dedication of volunteers and the impressive roll-out of mass testing and vaccinations across the city.
University engineer Steve Bode is among those featured in the photography exhibition. Steve was part of a team of University staff and PhD students who answered the call to produce protective face visors when there was a shortage of PPE for NHS staff at the start of the pandemic.
The team from the University’s School of Engineering, alongside industrial partners, used the latest in 3D printing and laser cutting technologies to produce more than 15,000 protective visors for use by healthcare staff in local NHS Trusts and partners.
The exhibition, in partnership with Liverpool City Council, also includes children’s paintings thanking the NHS to food parcels being prepared for those shielding during lockdown. It also showcases how the city is playing its part in the country’s roadmap out of lockdown, including the country’s first club night since the beginning of the pandemic being held at Bramley Moore Dock.
Dean of the School of Engineering, Professor Eann Patterson, said: ”It is marvellous to see the work of University Engineering staff and students recognised in this way.
“The team worked tirelessly to produce protective face visors during the unprecedented period at the start of the pandemic. I was proud of their work then and I am delighted to see their work featured in this exhibition.”

The `Covid 19: Liverpool’s Journey’ exhibition is on display on Thomas Steers Way in Liverpool ONE and runs until late summer.
