October is Black History Month – What’s Going On?

Black History Month

October is Black History Month, and the University of Liverpool is proud once again to join the celebration of Black history, arts and culture throughout the UK.

Following Black History Month UK’s example, we are celebrating the stories of ‘everyday people’ at the University, starting with Alison Fernandes, a Teaching Support Officer in the School of Histories Languages and Culture.

The University of Liverpool BAME Staff Network are hosting a webinar with Dr. Jason Arday on 22 October that will focus on Disrupting Racism in Higher Education. The event is free to attend and open to all.

The Liverpool Guild of Students is also hosting a broad range of events and resources that explore the beauty and power of black culture and history. This year’s programme has a focus on Black voices, particularly those marginalised even further such as Black LGBTQ+ and Black women.

A special online hub page has been created to help you navigate through all the insight, action and information throughout October – with features on recommended books, events, and exhibitions from The University of Liverpool, as well as links to Black History Month activities taking place across the city.

The events programme from National Museums Liverpool includes a series of thought-provoking displays, topical talks and discussions, and a series of film screenings and author-led storytelling for children. Highlights include Inspirational Black Scousers,  and talks by Dave Clay, author of ‘A Liverpool Black History 100 Years’ and Howard Gayle, Liverpool Football Clubs first Black player.Thr

Throughout October, the Kitchen Street venue in Liverpool is also hosting a celebration of local Black talent that will amplify the achievement of individuals, collectives, and organisations across the city. The venue also hosts The Black Market on 24 October, featuring locally produced photography, art, films, jewellery, trainers, clothes, food, music and more, as well as interactive workshop opportunities throughout the day
