University statement regarding incident at Liverpool Women’s Hospital

Statement from Vice-Chancellor Professor Dame Janet Beer regarding the incident at the Liverpool Women’s Hospital on Sunday, 14 November:

Following the events of Sunday 14th November at the Liverpool Women’s Hospital, our thoughts are with everyone affected by this incident. Officers from Counter Terrorism North West are leading the investigation supported by Merseyside Police and they will be liaising with the Liverpool Women’s Hospital and other city partners to establish what has taken place.

Merseyside Police will continue to liaise with community groups, community leaders, partner agencies and individuals in the coming days and weeks to make sure any concerns are addressed. There will also be an increased and visible police presence on the streets of Merseyside and we would encourage students and staff to engage with police officers and raise any concerns they may have.

I know that staff and students at the University will have concerns at this time. However, it is important to be clear that events of this nature are extremely rare.

It is also important that, at this very early stage, people do not speculate about what has happened. Merseyside Police will endeavour to update communities as soon as they are able. Official information regarding this incident can be accessed by following @MerseyPolice on Twitter, www.merseyside.police.uk and ‘Merseyside Police’ on Facebook.
