COVID-19: Closure of test centre on campus

The COVID-19 PCR test centre for those with symptoms will close on campus at the end of May.

The test centre, which has been operational since September 2020, remained open for staff and students beyond the end of legal restrictions in the UK in March to support those in our community who wished to continue to be able to test. However, use of the centre has dropped considerably in recent months and consequently the decision has been taken to close the service.

The campus test centre was a central part of the University’s CAMPUS Shield programme which was set up in the summer of 2020 to deliver a collective response to the challenges arising from the pandemic.

The programme was a great success, bringing together a network of experts and a multi-disciplinary operational team which contributed to a city-wide public health response. Since September 2020 the University testing programme has provided more than 230,000 assisted and home kit Lateral Flow tests for people with no COVID-19 symptoms, and the campus PCR test centre (for those with symptoms) has carried out 16,500 tests helping to reduce the spread of infection in Liverpool.

Although, all COVID-19 restrictions in England have now been lifted under the UK Government’s ‘Living with Covid’ plan, we expect our community to continue to act mindfully and reduce the spread of infection where possible.

If you have a high temperature (either on its own or with any other symptoms of a respiratory infection, such as COVID-19) or you do not feel well enough to carry out normal activities, you should stay at home or avoid contact with others until you no longer have a high temperature or until you feel better.
