A team of final year law students have been shortlisted for a national award in recognition of their outstanding commitment to the University of Liverpool’s Family Advice Project.
The prestigious LawWorks and Attorney General’s Student Pro Bono Awards celebrate the best pro bono activities undertaken by law students and law schools from across the UK each year.
The five shortlisted students volunteer at the Liverpool Law Clinic and lead on The Family Advice Project that provides advice and support to parents involved in private law disputes about children.
Olivia Clarke, Jordan Foulkes, Lauren Thompson Amelia Smith and Phoebe Sutcliffe are trained to work with clients, assisting with key aspects of legal proceedings. They also provide training and support to the 30 second year students who volunteer in the project.
All five of the shortlisted students volunteered as second-years, and have stayed on into the final year to help run the project, volunteering for at least one day a week.
The two supervising solicitors, Helenor Birt and Lucy Yeatman, rely on them to make the project viable. Since the current Lead Students took up their role the project has assisted 123 clients.
Helenor, Lucy and the 5 students will be attending the awards ceremony at the House of Commons on Thursday 27 April where the Award winners will be announced.
