The University of Liverpool has appointed four new members to its Council, as well as two co-opted members to its Audit Committee.
Council is the University’s governing body, responsible for the strategic direction of the University. Chaired by Carmel Booth, the President of Council, the Council is the legal entity and ultimate authority of the University. Council meets four times during the year and holds two Strategy Away Days.
Council has a membership of 22, including the Vice-Chancellor and members of the senior leadership team, Senate and Professional Services representatives, student representatives and a majority of independent external members.
New members appointed
The new appointees, all senior leaders from public, private and third sector organisations, will bring a breadth of leadership, sector and governance experience. The new Council members are:
Lay members
- Dr Alison Campbell brings a wealth of university and technology transfer experience and is currently the CEO of the Government Office for Technology Transfer. Alison was previously at Enterprise Ireland and the Medical Research Council Technology.
- Dr Mark Carawan has held a range of finance, audit, compliance and advisory roles with Deloitte, PwC, Barclays and Citigroup and is currently on the Board of the Bank of London.
- Mark Proctor CBE leads AstraZeneca’s Liverpool Vaccine R&D & Operations Site and was previously a Global Supply and Strategy Snr. Director, including responsibility for Covid vaccine supply and strategy.
- Matthew Reed has wide ranging experience of the charities sector and is the Chief Executive Officer of Marie Curie, and previously CEO of the Children’s Society and Cystic Fibrosis Trust.
Audit Co-opted members
- Sachin Date brings considerable experience of corporate transactions as a recently retired Strategy and Transactions Partner at Ernst & Young.
- Joanne Dawson is the Chief Financial Officer of Ormiston Academies Trust and previously at Jaguar Land Rover.
Co-opted members are external appointments and bring expertise and experience in specific areas to committees.
All new members will begin their tenure on 1 August 2023 for an initial three-year period.
