As previously communicated, the IT Security Team at the University has been made aware of an increase in phishing activity on our network.
To help you stay vigilant when managing your Inbox, IT Services is introducing a banner on all emails sent from an external email address to help you remember that you should only click on links or open attachments when you were expecting these, and you can verify that the sender is safe and can therefore trust that the content is not malicious.
What you need to do
The email banner is a reminder to stay vigilant when opening emails and any links or attachments they contain. It will have no effect on your experience of managing your emails outside of being a helpful prompt to keep you and the University safe.
Here’s an example of what the banner will look like:
Caution: This email originated from outside of the University. Do not click links or open attachments unless you recognise the source of this email and know the content is safe. Check sender address, hover over URLs and don’t open suspicious email attachments. |
Please note that the banner formatting may differ depending on your own display settings and the formatting of the email, but the message will always be the same.
This change will only alter the look of external emails and will offer protection against any criminals trying to access data with your credentials.
Remember to always check sender addresses, hover over URLs to verify their destination, and never open suspicious attachments.
Need help?
Please get in touch with IT Services if you have any concerns or queries about this change, and how to keep your data and the University’s data safe.
