Getting medical care as a student

If you have recently moved to Liverpool for your studies, it’s important to make sure you register with a local doctor’s (GP) surgery so that you can access to full medical care while you study and live here.

Your GP is usually your first port of call if you are unwell or need medical support, and it’s better to register before you might need to visit a doctor.

It is particularly important if you have a health condition such as asthma or diabetes, or require medication; but will also give you access to out of hours help if you become unwell.

How to register with a GP

Anyone in England can register with a GP surgery to access NHS services. Full-time international student studying in the UK for a period longer than six months are eligible to use NHS services.

You can choose to register with any local GP. Brownlow Health has four practices in and around Liverpool city centre and is likely to be the most convenient, and the doctors working there are experienced in the health needs of students.

If you register with them, you can also use the Student Health Service on campus. You can register online.

If you’re living elsewhere you can register at your nearest practice.

Getting ill during the holidays

If you become unwell or need other medical treatment when you’re at home or not staying near your university GP, you can contact your nearest practice to ask for treatment.

You can also visit an NHS urgent treatment centre, which can provide treatment for minor injuries or illnesses such as cuts, bruises and rashes.

Register with a dentist

Dental problems cannot be dealt with by doctors, and so it’s also important to make sure you register with a local dentist.

Not all treatment is free, even under the NHS. You may be able to apply for help with health costs, including prescriptions and dental care. You can find more information from the NHS on how to find a dentist and get help with dental costs.
