A delegation from the Consulate-General of China in Manchester visited the University of Liverpool last week (3 October 2023), to meet with Vice-Chancellor Professor Tim Jones and colleagues from the University’s Global Engagement and Partnerships team.
This provided an opportunity for the group, including recently appointed Consul General Mr Rui Tang, to learn more about the University and its long-standing relationship with China, in particular through joint venture University XJTLU.
Established in 2006 through a partnership between Xi’an Jiaotong University and the University of Liverpool, XJTLU has grown rapidly to become the largest international joint venture university in China.
Based in the world heritage city of Suzhou, XJTLU boasts more than 27,000 students from around the world. The University of Liverpool hosts up to 3000 of XJTLU’s ‘2+2’ students, who study two years in China and two years at Liverpool, on its campus at any one time.
Professor Tim Jones, University of Liverpool Vice-Chancellor said: “I was very pleased to host China’s new Consul General to Manchester and his team at the University, Mr Tang’s first visit since taking up the post in August this year. We discussed the historic links that exist between the cities of Liverpool and Shanghai, which next year celebrate 25 years of twinning. Celebrating these local and global links forms a key part of our University ethos and I look forward to our continued partnership and the opportunities this brings.”
