Obituary: Gillian Westhead

Words by the many friends of Gillian.

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our friend and former colleague, Gillian (Jill) Westhead. Jill passed away after a short illness on 18th October 2023.

Jill worked at the University for 27 years until her retirement in July 2009.  Originally as a mobile secretary in various departments i.e. Civil Engineering and Central Photographic before becoming full-time as a PA within the Faculty of Social and Environmental Studies working with various Deans and Sub-Deans until the Faculty was dispersed in 2006 Jill moved to the Foundation Building to work with Pro-VCs Ieuan Owen and Steve Flint until her retirement in July 2009.

Jill had many friends across the University and was known for her friendly, approachable manner, always with a smile.

Jill was always very chic with her stylish and sophisticated clothes, shoes, and make-up.  This didn’t stop the fun we had on ‘red nose day’ and the various social events we attended, one of which we still talk about, when she had us all in fancy dress for a special birthday. What a hoot we had.  There were many gatherings all of which involved fun and laughter.

Jill was extremely social, hosting parties and coffee mornings to raise money for cancer.

Jill was well-travelled, loved her holidays with her husband Alan, and loved having her all ladies’ holidays with her Mum, sister, and friends. We all enjoyed catching up on her travels and adventures.  Jill also had many holidays with her daughter Sara and granddaughter Poppy whom she was extremely proud of.

Our thoughts are with Alan, Sara, and Poppy, and the wider family.
