Diwali, known as the Festival of Lights, takes place this Sunday, 12 November.
Marking the start of the Hindu New Year, Diwali is also observed by Jain, Sikh, and Newar Buddhist communities to celebrate the victory of light over darkness. This weekend, Diwali will see lamps shine out in homes across Liverpool to welcome in light.
Celebrations will take place across five days, starting on Friday, 10 November, with Diwali falling on the third night.
The Guild’s National Hindu Students Forum is hosting a Diwali Ball on Wednesday 8 November, 6pm onwards, in Mountford Hall. The Ball is open to society members only and any student can join the society for free, before purchasing a ticket. There are details about contacting the society here.
Elsewhere in Liverpool Indika, an Indian festival of art and culture, brought to us by Milap, will run until Sunday.
Indika’s packed programme includes a concert from the 2023 Indika Festival band at the University’s Tung Auditorium. The band is a new collaboration between a group of diverse artists on a range of instruments and the concert features new arrangements of folk and traditional repertoire, telling stories of love and loss. In addition, the Bold Street restaurant Bundobust is teaming up with Indika Festival for a celebratory Diwali brunch. Enjoy live music, dance, magic, henna painting, storytelling and fantastic food including Bundo’s desi brunch menu, alongside unlimited chai. The lunch takes place on Sunday, 12 November between 10am-12pm or 12-2pm. Tickets are selling fast!
