The Human Anatomy Resource Centre (HARC) has curated a series of poignant videos that pay tribute to all those who have generously donated their bodies to the University. The videos aim to underscore the significant impact of body donation, highlighting the profound and far-reaching benefits to medical education and research.
The ‘Silent Teacher’ videos, produced by filmmaker Jenny Collins, share stories from HARC’s three main groups; the donors, the staff involved in teaching and research, and the students.
These incredibly personal and often deeply moving videos include stories such as relative Susan O’Brien reflecting on her mother’s interest and motivation for donating her body to medical science. Additionally, staff member Charlotte Casey highlights the contribution they make to training the next generation of medical professionals. The videos also include accounts from students studying anatomy like Chris Smith, who emphasises that donors enable teaching that is far more beneficial than alternatives like online learning.
The videos represent the first phase of a broader programme of initiatives by the Centre. The goal is to offer support resources as part of a comprehensive package for grieving families. Simultaneously, the initiative seeks to enhance awareness within the University and in the wider community about HARC’s body donation programme.
Claire Crumbleholme, Bequeathals Manager with the HARC, reflected: “We hope this video series will make a big impact. It’s a heartfelt tribute to those incredible individuals who selflessly donated their bodies – a space for all of us to come together to honour and remember them. We celebrate heartwarming stories of kindness and generosity, making this a beautiful expression of love and appreciation. Families can access cherished memories, ensuring the legacies of their loved ones continue to shine. We hope that the resource will improve and grow over time and become a space where families can find comfort and connect with a broader community.”
