The University of Liverpool Mathematics School (ULMaS) is amongst the top ranking schools in the country for average A-level grades, according to new Government data.

The University of Liverpool-sponsored specialist Maths school, which opened in September 2020, provides mathematical A-Levels for students from across the Liverpool City Region and beyond.

In the latest tables published by the Department for Education (DfE), ULMaS is:

Students at ULMaS are only entered for Mathematics, Further Mathematics, Physics and Computer Science A-Levels.

The average grade achieved by pupils was A (-) with more than half (56%) of students achieving 3 A* or A grades whilst 29% of entries achieved A* grades, 69% of entries achieved A* or A grades and 66% of students achieved at least AAB.

Headteacher Damian Haigh said: “We’re incredibly proud that our students are achieving results that put them in the top three sixth forms nationwide, and the top ten state schools in the country.

“Examination results are only one part of what this school is about.  Our students tell us that what they most appreciate about the school is the care and encouragement they receive from a small and committed staff team and a very kind and supportive peer group.

“Our students give a great deal to the school: volunteering to help with our outreach programme and giving their full commitment to their studies every day along with their involvement in the many additional enrichment and development opportunities that they get through ULMaS and the University of Liverpool.  We’re very glad to have the opportunity to provide a challenging and highly supportive educational environment for students who enjoy being taught by subject specialists.”

Dr Kathleen Johnson, Senior Lecturer in Chemistry at the University of Liverpool and Chair of Trustees, said: “The University of Liverpool’s Maths School opened its doors in 2020 to give young people the opportunity to excel in maths and provide them with the knowledge and skills for future success.

”I am delighted that the school has performed exceptionally well at both a national and regional level in these rankings which reflects both the hard work of pupils as well as the excellent teaching and support provided by the school’s specialist mathematicians, physicists and computer scientists.”
