Obituary: Professor Sophie Wuerger

The Department of Psychology is deeply saddened to report the death of Professor Sophie Wuerger, who passed away on the 3rd of January 2024 with cancer.

Sophie had been a member of staff in the Department of Psychology at Liverpool since February 2003. She secured her Personal Chair in 2013 and led the Department’s Clinical and Cognitive Neuroscience group with motivation and drive.

Sophie was a well-known, highly respected and well-liked figure in the field of Vision research. She excelled in both basic and applied research grounded in her own cutting-edge fundamental work on biological colour mechanisms and colour appearance. Her application of this knowledge spanned wide-ranging fields including colour remapping for advanced display technologies, skin imaging and 3D printing, and clinical applications of colour and light.

Sophie was proactive, positive and energetic. Her creative and innovative mindset, passion for research and support for the progression and development of the Department will be greatly missed.

Sophie leaves behind her husband Georg, daughter Charlotte and son Henry.

A memorial service will take place at the Metropolitan Cathedral, Liverpool at 3:30pm on the 19th of February.
