The University is holding a number of events to mark International Women’s Day and Women’s History Month.
International Women’s Day (8 March) is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. The day also marks a call to action for accelerating women’s equality. The theme for this year is ‘Invest in women: Accelerate progress’.
International Women’s Day has occurred for well over a century, with the first International Women’s Day gathering in 1911, supported by over a million people in Austria, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland.
University of Liverpool podcast: Feminist Cities
How is research making our cities more inclusive? The University’s Liverpool Feminist City Network – a group of staff connecting multiple areas of research – discuss Feminist Cities in the latest episode of the University’s Origina ldeas podcast.
History Workshop with the Women’s’ Student Community
Taking place on Monday, 4 March, this International Women’s Day workshop will explore the history of those who fought for women’s rights in Liverpool and across the country.
Student Safety Awareness
Join Guild Vice-President Kathryn, FemSoc, the University’s Student Services team, the Student Conduct Team and Campus Support Services to chat about how you can report any incidents of bullying, harassment, sexual misconduct, hate crime, assault or discrimination, as well as the safety measures on campus. Come along and meet the people behind the support tool, ask questions and become more confident standing up for yourself and your peers.
The event is taking place on Tuesday, 5 March 2024.
International Women’s Day Fair
The International Women’s Day Fair is taking place on Friday, 8 March on Guild Street there will be a series of stalls showcasing our local community and Guild societies who celebrate women.
Period Pad Workshop
Learn about the history of period product, period stigma and the ethical conversations surrounding them as well as designing a few of your own pads alongside our Sustainability Team. You might even be able to add to the famous period pad quilt. The Period Pad workshop is taking place in the Guild on Friday, 8 March. There will be hot drinks and biscuits.
Wikipedia edit-a-thon
The Wikipedia edit-a-thon is an in-person, drop-in event for staff and students taking place on Wednesday, 6 March.
This Women@Liverpool session will offer the opportunity to create, edit and add to Wikipedia pages on women who have inspired our research and practice. Staff and students are welcome to drop in to take part in editing. Participants are asked to book places and to bring a laptop.
Amplifying Women’s Voices
The Tung are hosting the Amplifying Women’s Voices event.
A lunchtime concert will be followed by a free event open to everyone who attended the concert. The talk will focus on women in screen music, highlighting diversity and amplifying voices to celebrate International Women’s Day 2024. The event is open to staff, students and members of the public.
Social Justice Change-Makers
The Social Justice Change-Makers event is open to staff, students and members of the public. The event is taking place on Wednesday, 6 March on campus and is a celebration of women who make an impact on law and social justice.
Caoilfhionn Gallagher KC, Chantelle Lunt and Afrah Qassim will be speaking at the event.
Women’s History Month in the Library
There are Women’s History Month displays is both libraries. You’ll find them in the foyer and can borrow physical books. The Library displays also celebrate International Women’s Day. The collection is also available online via LIBBY.
There are also similiar collections on Bookshare – a website that provides accessible books for learners with sight loss, dyslexia, dyspraxia, autism and qualifying physical disabilities.
