What’s on for Neurodiversity Celebration Week 2024

This week is Neurodiversity Celebration Week and there’s a range of ways you can get involved. This global initiative aims to foster inclusivity, challenge stereotypes, and promote understanding of neurodiversity.

About the event

The hybrid event is open to all University staff and students and will feature a series of talks, panel discussions, posters and networking opportunities.

The event has been designed to be as inclusive and accessible as possible, with the inclusion of quiet rooms, plus the option to also attend online via Zoom.

Among the fantastic line up of speakers are former Great British Bake Off contestant, Lizzie Acker, who’ll be sharing her experiences of living with Dyslexia and ADHD, Dr Tony Lloyd, CEO of the ADHD Foundation, and international inspirational speaker and best-selling author Keisha Swaby.

Disability Advice and Guidance Neurodiversity drop-ins

Our Disability Advice and Guidance team will be hosting a Neurodiversity-themed drop-in each day of the week, focusing on various neurodivergent conditions. Students who suspect they may be neurodivergent are encouraged to attend these sessions, where you can talk to our disability coaches and complete screening tools for different neurodivergent conditions.

Sydney Jones Library Sensory Room

Sydney Jones Library has  recently introduced a new sensory room, designed to provide a calming and relaxing environment for students with support plans. Equipped with sensory objects, dimmable lights, comfortable seating, and other amenities, this space offers you an opportunity to de-stress and unwind in a comforting setting. Find out more about the room and how you can access it on the library webpages.

The library are also curating a special book display on neurodiversity. This display will showcase both existing books in the collection and newly acquired titles covering topics such as Autism, ADHD, OCD, Dyslexia, and Dyspraxia. Additionally, you can access an extensive collection of e-books on neurodiversity for free through the Libby/Overdrive platform.
