Politics professor awarded prestigious prize

Professor Tonge with the Chair of the Political Studies Association, Dr Rose Gann

Professor Jon Tonge from our Department of Politics has been awarded the Sir Isaiah Berlin Prize from the Political Studies Association (PSA) for his outstanding professional contribution to Political Studies.

Professor Tonge, who has worked at the University of Liverpool since 2005, is an expert on politics in Britain and Northern Ireland and has published books on all elections in the UK since 1997. A regular media commentator in the political world, he was described by the Guardian as “Mystic Meg” in 2022 for correctly predicting the result of the Conservative Party’s no confidence vote in Boris Johnson.

The PSA is the main body representing Politics academics in the UK and its annual conference draws hundreds of attendees every year.

Professor Tonge was presented with his prize at the 74th PSA Annual Conference in Glasgow. The Sir Isaiah Berlin Prize has previously been awarded to other eminent political scholars from universities across the world.

Professor Tonge said: “It was a wonderful surprise to receive such a prestigious award from the PSA and I’d like to thank all colleagues who made this event possible.”
