Protecting children is something that every society should work towards. The latest episode of ‘Original Ideas’ explores how researchers at Liverpool are undertaking vital work to safeguard children’s rights globally.
In this fourth episode, Professor Helen Stalford, a leading expert on European Children’s Rights, reveals how she has overcome substantial challenges in her research to make a positive impact on migrant children in Europe.
From the University’s School of Law and Social Justice, Helen explains how her research has been used as evidence in various cases. Her work was referenced and used in the illegal migration bill at the House of Lords and in supporting multiple cases of strategic litigation to improve access to justice – therefore ensuring that children’s rights are enforced in practice. She also discusses how her findings have refuted some of the overriding narratives about migration to the UK.
The second half of the podcast features PhD student Kindah Ali from the Department of Communications and Media, whose research focuses on the use of children’s images by the media during wars. Originally from Syria, Kindah witnessed firsthand the suffering caused by conflict and was forced to flee to the UK with her young daughter. She talks in depth about her experience as a refugee, and how the political use of children’s images during conflict by the British media triggered her interest in children’s rights research. Kindah’s Three Minute Thesis on this subject can also be viewed here.
