Two Professors from the University of Liverpool have been recognised in the 2024 King’s Birthday Honours list.
Professor Matt Rosseinsky, from the Department of Chemistry and Materials Innovation Factory, has been awarded an OBE for services to materials chemistry research and innovation.
A Professor of Inorganic Chemistry, Matt Rosseinsky is a globally recognised expert in materials chemistry. He has received national and international prizes including the Davy Medal, the Hughes Medal, the Basolo Medal of the American Chemical Society and the 2023 Eni Energy Frontiers Award.
He and his research team have developed a next generation approach to materials discovery that fuses digital tools with scientific insight to accelerate the design of new materials for applications spanning energy and information storage to catalysis.
Professor Rosseinsky said: “I am grateful for this award, which recognises the efforts of my team, my colleagues at Liverpool and our academic and industrial partners in the UK and beyond. It reflects the critical importance of materials chemistry research for achieving a sustainable future.”
Melita Gordon, Professor of Global Health with the University of Liverpool and the Malawi-Liverpool-Wellcome Programme, has been awarded a Companion of the Order of St Michael and St George (CMG) for services to global health.
Professor Gordon is recognised for her outstanding contribution as an expert in the speciality of Gastroenterology and General Medicine, who has made ground-breaking advancements with a profound impact on global health, particularly in Africa.
Her career spans over 25 years, during which she has led a multidisciplinary programme in Malawi, focused on understanding Invasive Salmonella Disease. Her pioneering research has accelerated the development and deployment of critical Salmonella vaccines in Africa, protecting millions of vulnerable children.
Professor Gordon said: “I am both humbled and delighted to learn of this honour. The theme of Companionship feels very fitting – I am grateful for the many students, colleagues, and team-members, and for my family, who have been alongside as my companions in this work.”
Vice-Chancellor, Professor Tim Jones, said: “I am thrilled that Professor Matt Rosseinsky and Professor Melita Gordon have been recognised for their remarkable contributions to their respective fields.
“These richly deserved accolades acknowledge the world-leading quality of their research and the positive impact it has on society. I would like to extend my warmest congratulations to them both on their awards.”
Also named in the King’s Birthday Honours is Emeritus Professor Callum Youngson, former Dean of the School of Dentistry and Associate Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Education at the University.
