The University has worked in partnership with XJTU for almost 30 years. This has included the establishment of Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University (XJTLU) in 2006, which has grown rapidly to become the largest international joint venture university in China. XJTLU representatives also joined the visiting delegation.

Professor Tim Jones, Vice-Chancellor at the University of Liverpool said: “I am delighted that the University of Liverpool is continuing its strong bi-lateral partnership with one of China’s most prestigious universities, XJTU. We already have active research collaborations in a wide range of areas and are keen to build on this and identify further opportunities for PhD students and research staff to work between the two institutions.”

Many of UoL’s research projects with XJTU are underpinned by PhD student mobility supported by the China Scholarships Council.

Existing collaborations include research areas such as heritage, global health, green chemistry, business and finance, and languages as well as electrical engineering & electronics which was the pilot area of collaborative work between the two institutions.

149 joint papers were published in international journals between 2018 and 2024.
