Over the last year the University of Liverpool has celebrated fantastic feedback from our students, a Gold rating for our teaching and improvements in a number of independent rankings, putting us among some of the best institutions in the world.
Just today (Thursday 15 August), the University maintained its position in the ShanghaiRanking Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU). More than 2500 universities are ranked by ARWU every year and the best 1000 in the world are published. The 2024 table places Liverpool 101-150 in the world, and 9-12 in the UK.
And that’s not all:
Our students’ voice
In July the University saw significant improvements across all seven areas of the 2024 National Student Survey (NSS), placing it third overall in the Russell Group, based on performance across the whole survey.
The NSS is commissioned annually by the Office for Students (OfS) and invites final year undergraduates to provide feedback on their experience of the University, covering areas including academic support, student voice and learning opportunities. Notable highlights included:
- Learning resources achieving a positivity score of 90%;
- A positive score from students on academic support, which has increased to 87% from 83% in 2023; and
- Communications around mental wellbeing support, which scored 77% (up 5% from 2023) and which follows a drive in this area to improve awareness of student support services.
Students recently voted the University of Liverpool #1 for its course content in the StudentCrowd survey. It also ranked #18 overall in the Best UK Universities 2024 league tables.
StudentCrowd analysed 31,564 verified student reviews to select the top UK universities. One University of Liverpool student said: “I love the university – it is inclusive, supportive, and fun. The lecturers and module coordinators provide lots of materials and additional resources to aid assessment and research.”
Our teaching
In September The University of Liverpool has been awarded the highest rating, Gold, in the Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF) 2023.
Run by the Office for Students, TEF is a national scheme that aims to encourage higher education providers to improve and deliver excellence in the areas that undergraduate students care about the most: teaching, learning and achieving positive outcomes from their studies.
The TEF panel rated a number of elements of the University’s provision as outstanding, including:
- Teaching on my course
- Learning resources
- Approaches to supporting student success
- Continuation and completion rates

If that wasn’t enough, in May the University was ranked 19th in the 2025 Complete University Guide (CUG), representing an improvement of five places on last year and the University’s highest ever position in the table.
