WriteFest 2024 – Writing events, resources and support throughout November

November 2024 is academic writing month – WriteFest – and teams across the University are working together to provide a packed schedule of events and resources for researchers at any stage.

Whether you’re looking to finish that grant, write a policy briefing or submit a journal article, WriteFest 2024 is here to support you achieve you writing goals.

Coordinated by the Researcher Development and Culture team in The Academy, this year’s programme of events promises to be better than ever. During WriteFest 2024 there are masterclasses on writing abstracts and CVs, as well as workshops on policy briefings, effective writing techniques, combatting writer’s block and more. You’ll be able to hear advice from a former editor of Nature and discover how to write for non-academic audiences across a range of formats.

For those supervising postgraduate students (PGRs), the Supervisor’s Network is running a session on exploring what the PhD thesis looks like and strategies for supporting PGRs in their writing. For any PGRs in your research group, there are workshops on writing skills for those in their mid- and late-stages as well as a dedicated 1-day writing retreat for PGRs.

Providing you with time, space and structure

Writing retreats can give you with the time and space to focus on your writing without external distractions interrupting you. Throughout WriteFest 2024 there are regular 2-hour online retreats, run twice a week by the Shut Up and Write group on Teams.

If you’re looking to dedicate more time to your writing, the Research Staff Association is running a day-long writing retreat open to all staff on Tuesday 26th November, 09:30-16:30, with structured writing sessions, thematic discussions and support.

WriteFest across the University of Liverpool

There is so much going on across the University during WriteFest. Teams involved in this cross-departmental series of events include the Heseltine Institute, the Research Staff Association, the English Language Centre, Academic Development, Research and Partnerships, Output Development, the Library and KnowHow teams, as well as the PGR, Prosper and Research Staff teams within Researcher Development and Culture.

How to get involved with WriteFest 2024:

  1. Register for workshops: develop your knowledge and skills in all areas of writing by attending our workshops.
  1. Join the WriteFest team: share your writing goals, accomplishments and challenges with your peer community throughout the month, get updates on resources and activities, and receive writing prompts and inspiration.
  1. Join the Shut up and Write team: commit to dedicated time to write while connecting virtually with your peers.
  2. Access the Writing Resources Wakelet and explore over 40 separate writing-related resources from university-wide development events, including WriteFest and Making an Impact recorded workshops, blogs, playlists and self-directed activities.

So what are you waiting for? WriteFest 2024 is an opportunity to develop your writing skills, set yourself writing goals and finally finish that paper or chapter you’ve been writing!

The keynote will be delivered by Professor Louise Kenny, EPVC of the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences.

Images of Research

The Research Staff Conference will once again host Images of Research, giving researchers an opportunity to creatively convey and promote their research work through an engaging and thought-provoking image. The deadline for application submissions is Friday 8th November 2024.
