University rises eight places in latest THE World University Rankings

The University of Liverpool has climbed eight places to 160th in the 2025 Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings.

The THE has been providing performance data on universities since 2004 and the THE World University Rankings is widely recognised as one of the definitive lists of top universities globally.

THE World University rankings assess universities across five different pillars – teaching (weighted 29.5%), research quality (30%), research environment (30%), international outlook (7.5%) and industry (4%).

Data from the Academic Reputation Survey is used to support some of these pillars. The Academic Reputation Survey is a global survey of academics who are asked to name up to 15 universities that they believe are the best in both research and teaching by subject area. This year’s survey combines 2024 and 2023 data amounting to more than 93,000 survey responses.

The University has made improved in both the teaching and research environment pillars which is the result of significant improvements in the University’s Reputation Rankings for both teaching and research.

The improvement in this year’s ranking builds on an eight place rise in the 2024 THE World University Rankings.

It also mirrors the University’s improvement across both international and domestic rankings including an 11 place rise to 165th in the 2025 QS World University Rankings alongside achieving 23rd place in the Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide, 27th place in the Guardian University Guide and 19th place in the Complete University Guide.

Professor Tim Jones, Vice-Chancellor at the University of Liverpool said: “I am delighted to see this eight place rise in the THE World University Rankings with strong performance in the teaching and research environment pillars. These results demonstrate the high level of commitment from colleagues to deliver excellence across our education and research programmes.  Our continued improvements in rankings are in keeping with the ambitions set out in Strategy 2031 to become a global top 100 university.”

The 2025 THE World rankings collates data from over 2092 institutions from 115 countries and territories.  The full rankings, including methodology, can be accessed via the THE website.
