The University of Liverpool’s latest Original Ideas Podcast explores the global work taking place to tackle dementia – a condition that affects more than 55 million people worldwide.
In Episode 6: Dementia, Original Ideas presenter, Gavin Freeborn is joined by Dr Clarissa Giebel, Senior Research Fellow at the University of Liverpool’s Institute of Population Health, where she leads the Dementia Research Group on Inequalities. Also joining the discussion is Dr Megan Polden, a post-doctoral researcher with a focus on dementia.
Here they discuss their research to improve awareness, diagnosis, care, support and inequalities for those living with dementia and their families.
In the last year Clarissa has launched the Dementia Inequalities Game, a board game developed with partners, people with dementia and carers to shine a light on the inequalities and challenges people face before and after a dementia diagnosis. She also recently secured £1.5m to establish the first national network dedicated to finding solutions to inequalities in dementia diagnosis and care.
Dr Megan Polden discusses her research work in the community, using music and singing in dementia care alongside organisations such as The Brain Charity. Working with Clarissa, Megan’s postdoctoral research underlines the importance of combining academic research with lived experience to create meaningful change.
