Staff Awards 2025: Student Experience Award named in memory of Phil Leonard

Nominations are now open for Staff Awards 2025, with a newly-renamed Award for Outstanding Student Experience in memory of former Head of Student Administration, Phil Leonard.

Phil sadly passed away in May of this year. The Student Experience Award has been renamed the ‘Phil Leonard Award for Outstanding Student Experience’ in memory of his dedication and work that touched the lives of many thousands of students and colleagues.

Vice-Chancellor, Professor Tim Jones, said: “Phil was a wonderful colleague who showed great dedication, kindness and support for students. He contributed an enormous amount towards the student experience at Liverpool and it is a fitting tribute to Phil’s life and work to have this award named after him with the blessing of his family and close colleagues.”

Award categories

Staff can nominate their colleagues in a range of awards, as follows:

Following feedback, the two Equality and Diversity awards and two Sustainability awards have been streamlined to create two categories: ‘Outstanding Contribution to Sustainability’ and ‘Outstanding Contribution to Equality and Diversity’.

How to nominate

Staff can nominate a colleague or team through the online nomination portal on TULIP. Through the portal you can save and manage all your nominations and submit them when you are ready. You can access the portal to make a nomination on TULIP here (log-in may be required).

Guidance for making a nomination is also available via the Staff Awards Intranet site.

The Vice-Chancellor said: “Our annual Staff Awards is a great event and I’m looking forward to seeing more fantastic examples of hard work and dedication from colleagues across the University. I would encourage everyone to consider who deserves recognition this year and make a nomination.”

Nominations can only be made by University staff for their colleagues. Nominations cannot be made by, or for, Postgraduate Research Students (PGRs) or students studying at the University or sole external parties.

Self-nominations cannot be made for individual awards, but can be made for a team award when the nominator is part of that team. Please also note that the same nominations should not be submitted in multiple categories.

Full descriptions of all awards are available on the Staff Awards webpage where there is also a link to make a nomination. Nominations close on Friday, 10 January 2025.

The award winners will be presented with a certificate and a specially commissioned trophy at a ceremony in June. If you have further questions or queries, or require a hard copy nomination form, please e-mail: staffawards@liverpool.ac.uk
