Sherley: A letter to first-year me

Class of 2024 graduate

Sherley Admane is a Class of 2024 MSc Digital Marketing and Analytics graduate. As we approach our December graduation ceremonies, she looks back at her time at the University of Liverpool and thinks about what she would tell her younger self.

Dear Sherley,

You made it. This is where you’ve always wanted to be, to study at one of the top universities in the UK, the University of Liverpool. I know how much this means to you, the way you were navigating the street view map on your phone finding your way to the university the moment you booked your student accommodation.

Leaving home wasn’t easy. I remember the tearful goodbyes with your family and the quiet promises you made to yourself to succeed. But here’s the first thing I want you to know: don’t let that weigh you down. Instead, focus on making the most of this year, because this incredible year can change your life.

Right now, everything feels new, and maybe even a little overwhelming. You’re looking at the people around you and noticing their nerves. But you’re calm. You’ve always dreamed of this moment, and now it’s yours. That confidence you’re feeling? Hold onto it. And when you ask yourself, What’s next? Give yourself some time. You’re about to accomplish so much more than you think.

You’re going to meet a lot of new people around. Some will become your closest friends, the kind you can call at any time. Others will teach you something in passing. Be open to all of it. There will be plenty of challenges—late-night study sessions, moments of self-doubt, and those tough days when it feels like nothing’s going your way.

But here’s the thing: every stumble will teach you something about yourself. Each challenge will help you grow into someone stronger, more resilient, and ready for what’s ahead. This year will also bring opportunities that will make you the happiest.

Here’s a little spoiler, you are going get that job at the university, working with an amazing team of people who’ll always support you. The connections you make will shape your career and your perspective on life.

And then there’s the city, Liverpool will surprise you and you will fall in love with it. It might feel small at first, but you’ll quickly realize it’s full of life, culture, and warmth. It will be the best city you’ve ever lived in, and it will love you back just as much. You’ll only understand how much this place means to you when it’s time to leave. Graduating in this wonderful city will be the end of beginning of your Master’s journey and every time you visit back here, you will feel at home.

So, get to work. Take on challenges, meet new people, and explore. Savour the incredible food and soak in all the experiences this place and year has to offer. Enjoy the little moments along the way before it all comes to an end and stays with you, forever.

With love and pride,

Your future self

Sherley
