Changes to your University OneDrive storage limit

Microsoft has withdrawn unlimited storage for the education sector so IT Services needs to make some changes to how Microsoft files are retained at the University. As such, new OneDrive file storage limits of 50 GB for Postgraduate Taught (PGT) and Undergraduate students will be in place from Tuesday 3 June.

As stated in previous communications, these changes mean that you need to keep the number of files saved in your OneDrive at a manageable level. The primary purpose of personal OneDrives is for you to keep your assignments safe and secure.

Retaining documents on your OneDrive has environmental implications as every GB of data you store produces 0.28kg of CO2 emissions1, enough to charge almost 36 smartphones2, but by managing your files effectively, you can reduce your impact.

Remember that Microsoft Office 365 records different versions of your documents as you amend them, so you don’t need to save multiple versions with different file names. IT Services will be switching on the “automatic versioning” functionality from Monday, 19 May, which will use less storage than the current “default versioning” option, without having any impact on the way you manage different document versions.

You can find out more in our Information Protection Guide and IT Acceptable Use Policy, and if you need any further support managing your digital storage or have any questions about maintaining your files going forward, you can contact the IT Service Desk.
