The University of Liverpool and Saveetha Institute of Medical and Technical Sciences (SIMATS) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), marking the beginning of a five-year strategic partnership in health and life sciences.
The MoU establishes a formal framework for cooperation between the two universities, focusing on key areas such as joint research projects, student exchange programmes, academic events, and opportunities for visiting students. These initiatives aim to foster a dynamic and inclusive environment for international learning and interdisciplinary collaboration.
Both institutions are known for their world leading research and teaching excellence in health and life sciences, and the new agreement paves the way for a number of transformative education and research opportunities including:
- Joint research projects addressing pressing global health and scientific challenges.
- Student exchange programmes for undergraduate and postgraduate students, offering immersive, cross-cultural academic exposure.
- Collaborative academic events such as conferences, seminars, and expert meetings.
- Visiting student opportunities for international students

The University’s Professor Shakila Thangaratinam, who was present at the signing ceremony, said: “This MoU between the University of Liverpool and Saveetha is a testament to our University’s ambitions to nurture partnerships with Indian higher education institutions. We are looking forward to welcoming the first set of Medical students arriving from Saveetha University to our Summer school this year, and to deepen our collaborations across other disciplines.”
Ben Pugsley, 1st Secretary Justice and Home Affairs and Acting Deputy British High Commissioner to Chennai said at the event: “I’m delighted to be here at the start of this exciting new partnership bringing together two world-class institutions in a spirit of shared purpose. Today we strengthen the Living Bridge between us and lay the foundation for even more innovation between our two countries in the field of medical sciences.”
As this partnership evolves, both universities anticipate expanding their collaboration to include further innovative initiatives and deeper institutional engagement. This strategic alliance reflects a growing commitment to shaping the future of global higher education through shared expertise, cultural exchange, and academic cooperation.
Liverpool and India deepening collaboration
The University of Liverpool also recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Garden City University, Bengaluru, to foster academic collaboration in Health and Life Sciences. This agreement further promotes staff and student exchange and reinforces Liverpool’s dedication to building strong academic links across India.
This May, the University of Liverpool announced its new campus in Bengaluru, representing a major chapter in UK–India educational collaboration and further cementing its long-term commitment to India’s dynamic academic landscape.
