Starting a new chapter in a different country can be exciting, but it also comes with plenty of questions. That’s where the International Advice and Guidance (IAG) team comes in. Based at the University of Liverpool, the IAG team is dedicated to supporting all international and European students from the moment you begin your visa application, right through to graduation – and beyond.
Supporting you every step of the way
The team offers specialist advice on visas and immigration, as well as support with practical matters like budgeting, living in the UK, accessing healthcare, understanding work rights, and staying safe.
Each September and January, IAG runs ‘Hello International!’ – a week-long induction programme to help new international and European students settle into life at the University. Throughout the year, they also offer a variety of in-person and online sessions on topics ranging from improving your English to how to keep safe online.
Visa Advice and Drop-In Sessions
Information on our website includes a range of study related visas such as Student Route visas, visitor visas and the Graduate Route visa.
You can also get advice in person at drop-in sessions (no booking necessary) with a member of the team at the Alsop Building between 1.30-3.30pm Monday to Friday. Online drop-ins are also available which you can book on to from our website.

Meet the Team
Chris Fawn – International Advice and Guidance Team Leader
Chris joined the team back in 2012 as an International Student Adviser and has been leading the team since January 2020. Chris loves football and is responsible for organising weekly lunchtime games of University staff 5-a-side football in the Sports Hall at Sport Liverpool.
Anniken S Jensen – International Student Adviser
Anniken joined the team in September 2023 and has been working for the University in various teams since joining as a Student Ambassador in 2025. Anniken is Norwegian and was herself an international student at the University of Liverpool. She also likes to spend any dry weekends roller-skiing in her local park.
Amber Allen-Thomson – International Student Adviser
Amber is the newest member of the team and joined in May 2024. She previously worked for the Liverpool Guild of Students. Amber finds manatees adorable and wants to one day swim with one in the wild.
