Beginning or returning to university is exciting, but it can also bring challenges. Our Student Services team is here to support you throughout your time at Liverpool. Here’s a round-up of how they can help, plus other external support you might find useful.

Support during Welcome Week – Abercromby Wellbeing Zone
In collaboration with Brownlow Health, our on-campus GP practice, the Abercromby Wellbeing Zone is where you can come along to register for a GP and chat to our Money Advice and Wellbeing teams.
Find us on Abercromby Square from Monday 15 – Wednesday 17 September, 10am – 4pm.
🌙 Support Outside University Hours
If you need to talk to someone in the evening or at weekends, you’re not alone. The following organisations can help:
- Health Assured – Free, confidential helpline for our students, available 24/7, 365 days a year: call them for free on 0800 028 3766
- Samaritans – 24/7 listening support: 116 123
- Papyrus HopelineUK – Suicide prevention helpline: 0800 068 4141 (9am–midnight, every day)
🎓 Other Student Support Services
You can also access help from other services at the university:
- Academic Support – The KnowHow team offers online resources to help you succeed in your studies. The English Language Centre (ELC) supports both home and international students with academic and language skills.
- Schools & Departments – Sometimes the best step is speaking directly with your school or department; each has Learning and Teaching Support Officers who can help you with everything from your wellbeing to questions about your academic studies.
- The Guild – The Guild offer free and confidential advice and are independent from the University.
- Self-Help Hub – Our self-help hub has resources on anxiety, stress, imposter syndrome, sleep, and more—designed to help you take early action and stop problems from escalating.
🚨 Crisis Support – if you need urgent help
If you or someone else is at immediate risk of serious harm or injury, you should:
- Call 999 or go to your nearest A&E.
- If you are in the Liverpool area and are experiencing significant mental health difficulties, call the Mersey Care NHS Foundation Trust Crisis Line on 0800 145 6570.
- Outside Liverpool, dial 111 to find local urgent mental health support
University Support
- If you are on campus and require immediate assistance or feel unsafe you can call Campus Support on 0151 794 2222.
- If you are staying in University halls you can get help and advice from the halls staff.
- University of Liverpool students can speak to a qualified counsellor 24/7 via Health Assured. Call 0800 028 3766.
External Support
- Liverpool Light Mental Health Crisis Support – based at 181-185 London Road, Liverpool, L3 8JG. This is a walk-in centre, open from 6pm to 1am. You don’t need an appointment and is a safe place for people who are experiencing or at risk of a mental health crisis to walk in and talk to someone.
- PAPYRUS is the UK Charity for the prevention of young suicide (under 35). For PAPYRUS HOPELINEUK call 0800 068 4141 (open 9am – midnight every day of the week).
- You can text SHOUT free of charge from any UK mobile network and get confidential advice and support straight to your mobile
- If you need to talk to someone in confidence the Samaritans have a 24-hour phone line which is free to call: 116 123.
- SAFE Place Merseyside is the Sexual Assault Referral Centre for the Merseyside area. Offering a service for both males and females who have been sexually assaulted both recently and at any time in the past. For services in other areas of the UK, you can search by location here.
- We also have partners from Axess Sexual Health and Mersey Care’s Eating Disorder Service.
