The lights are back on in Tate Hall Museum

After five years of closure, the Tate Hall Museum at the University of Liverpool’s Victoria Gallery & Museum (VG&M) has reopened its doors – and it’s back brighter than ever with the launch of Lightbulb moments, a free exhibition celebrating Liverpool’s great ideas, discoveries and creativity.

Open now and running until autumn 2027, Lightbulb moments displays 150 objects – from archaeological finds and scientific tools to puzzles and literature. Visitors also have the chance to explore University of Liverpool researchers who share their own ‘lightbulb moments’.

To mark the reopening, VG&M is hosting Super Saturday this weekend (13 September, 11am-3pm). Families can be among the first to explore the new exhibition, meet scientists and students, and uncover surprising inventions from Liverpool’s past and present. Special highlights include live performances from As Creatives with their interactive show Innovation and Beyond, hands-on science demonstrations, and creative craft activities where visitors can design origami birds, make their own coasters, and create badges to take home.

Dr Matt Greenhall, Director of Libraries, Museums and Galleries at the University of Liverpool, said: “The reopening of Tate Hall Museum is a momentous occasion. After five years of careful building restoration, it’s wonderful to see this historic space welcoming visitors once again. Lightbulb moments is the perfect exhibition to mark this new chapter, celebrating both the University and the city as a hub of innovation and great ideas.”
