New PGR checklist

If it feels like there’s a lot to do before you join us , don’t worry. We’ve condensed the important tasks for you below, and you can find more detailed information in your PGR handbook if you need it.

1. Activate your IT (MWS) account.

Go to register.liv.ac.uk and click ‘Activate’. Have your University ID number handy as you’ll need this.

Once you’ve activated your account, you’ll be able to access your university email, our systems and IT services. If you have any problems, our IT Services team can help; get in touch with them at  servicedesk@liverpool.ac.uk

2. Access My Liverpool and your PGR Toolbox

Visit my.liverpool.ac.uk and log in with your IT (MWS) account details and follow the instructions to set a password.

You can use My Liverpool to:

  • View your registration and course of study.
  • Apply for changes in your registration status

You’ll use the PGR Toolbox to:

  • Keep a record of your supervisory meetings.
  • Track any training and professional development you complete.
  • Complete your Annual Progress Report (APR). You can find out more about APRs in chapter 5 of your PGR handbook.

3. Complete your Academic Registration

You can complete this via My Liverpool. The registration process is made up of 3 steps:

You need to complete all 3 steps to be fully registered and detailed instructions about registration will also be emailed to you.

4. Requirements for international PGRs

If you are an international student, there are some extra steps you’ll need to take as part of your registration. We will be in touch about this via email so please make sure you have read carefully any information that has been sent to you.

You’ll need to:

  • Share your passport and a share code from your UKVI account with our Student Life team.
  • If you applied for your visa outside UK, you’ll also need to show evidence of your entry into the UK.
  • Bring original versions of your existing qualification certificates (if you haven’t already submitted with your application).

5. Fees and funding

It’s important that you arrange payment of your fees before your programme starts. There are several ways to fund your studies:

  • Self-funding: you can either pay for your whole year’s programme fees in full (or part of the year if you start in a month other than October) or in three equal instalments
  • Doctoral Loan: if you’re funding via a Student Loans Company Docotral Loan, remember to email feesenq@liverpool.ac.uk with your disbursement schedule to arrange a corresponding payment plan.
  • Sponsorship: if you’re sponsored by a government body, private company or a research contract, you must provide us with a letter from the sponsor confirming this by email to feesenq@liverpool.ac.uk

If you have any questions about paying your fees, get in touch with our Fees Team via feesenq@liv.ac.uk. Our Money Advice & Guidance service can also offer advice and support to help you with any financial difficulties.

6. Your University ID Card

We’ll issued this to you once you’ve completed registration. You need your card for library access, printing, and access to certain buildings, so we advise always carrying it with you.

If you lose your card at any point, you can request a new one via the ServiceNow helpdesk.

7. Find your way around our IT services and systems

Once you’ve activated your IT (MWS) account, you’ll be able to access our IT services and systems, including:

  • Use PCs across campus and access your secure M: drive storage and our virtual learning environment, Canvas.
  • Apply for our PGR Laptop Loan Scheme. This is open to all first year PGR students based on our main campus and Alder Hey and Leahurst sites and gives you a free laptop to use for the duration of your studies.
  • Connecting personal devices to our eduroam Wi-Fi or wired ports in University Halls.

If you need any IT-related help, you can get in touch with IT Services via email, phone and our online service desk.

8. Make a note to keep your contact details updated

It’s important that you keep your contact details up-to-date in Personal Details area of My Liverpool. If you’re an international student, it’s a legal requirement that this information is accurate.

We’ll use your university email address as our main contact channel with you throughout your studies, so make sure you’re checking this account regularly.

You can find more information on updating your personal information here.

✅ By completing this checklist, you’ll be fully registered and ready to begin your postgraduate journey with us here at Liverpool.
