The University of Liverpool has marked the first exciting step towards its upcoming Bengaluru campus with a ground-breaking ceremony held at Alembic City.
The event at Alembic City brought together senior leadership from the University of Liverpool, UK government representatives, academic partners, and a range of industry leaders, reaffirming the University’s commitment to building a future-ready education and research ecosystem in India.
High profile speakers at the event included Chandru Iyer, Deputy British High Commissioner to Karnataka and Kerala, and young people from The School of Raya in Bengaluru gave a performance.
The campus, set to begin operations in 2026, represents a significant step forward in India-UK higher education collaboration.
Designed as a future-ready learning and research environment integrating global academic standards with India’s higher education ambitions, the Bengaluru campus will bring together the best of the UK and India. Students will experience a fully flexible, integrated learning environment, with smart classrooms, research and innovation spaces, collaboration hubs, specialised laboratories, and access to Bloomberg terminals. These future-focused facilities aim to create a dynamic ecosystem where academic learning, industry engagement, and interdisciplinary research coexist seamlessly.
Professor Tim Jones, Vice-Chancellor, University of Liverpool, said: “It is exciting to be on site at Alembic City for our groundbreaking ceremony today, which is the first step in building what is to be a state-of-the-art new learning environment for our future students. Karnataka’s reputation as a knowledge and technology powerhouse, and in turn Alembic City as one of Bengaluru’s most vibrant developments for education, research and innovation, makes the region an ideal home for the University’s campus in India.
“We are honoured to have a number of distinguished guests in attendance to help us mark this latest milestone for the University of Liverpool in Bengaluru.”
Mr Chandru Iyer, Deputy High Commissioner to Karnataka and Kerala, British High Commission, added: “We were delighted to welcome the announcement of University of Liverpool coming to Namma Bengaluru earlier this year. We are excited to be part of the Ground-breaking ceremony for their new campus in Alembic City and would like to wish them the very best as they prepare to deliver a world-class UK education offer to future generations of Indian students.”
Campus architect Mr Ram Joshi said: “When we first stepped into Alembic’s structure, we saw a place ready to bend the past into a future. In this old glass factory, we saw the chance to fuse Liverpool’s creative maritime soul with Bengaluru’s intellectual energy. Our design for the University of Liverpool’s Bengaluru campus transforms industry into knowledge: red steel becomes the new red brick; a curved wall of glass becomes the lens through which students see the world anew; a timber-lined hull becomes a vessel for the uncharted. This campus is a living narrative of adaptive reuse and renewal, where the academic excellence, like glass, is shaped by fire, sharpened by craft, and made radiant by vision.”
Building on its world-leading reputation as a member of the prestigious Russell Group, the University of Liverpool’s India campus will offer UK-accredited degree programmes designed to meet India’s evolving talent needs. The initial portfolio of courses is now open for applications and includes Computer Science, Game Design, Business Management, Accounting and Finance, and Biomedical Sciences.
The Game Design programme is a first for UK university campuses in India and will prepare students for the competitive nature of the industry. Combining coding, creativity, and critical theory to deliver a distinctive new provision in interactive audio-visual media, this interdisciplinary programme is one of the first of its kind in the prestigious UK Russell Group.
Alison Barrett MBE, Country Director India, British Council said: “My warmest congratulations to the University of Liverpool on breaking ground at its campus in Bengaluru. The UK and India are committed to expanding access to world-class learning and to advancing research that responds to global priorities. This new campus will bring high-quality UK education, industry-aligned programmes, and internationally recognised faculty to students in India, deepening academic ties and opening exciting new avenues of partnership and opportunity.”
