University marks Holocaust Memorial Day at Salford event

The University joined higher education institutions from across the north west at a Holocaust Memorial Day event, organised by Universities UK and Salford City Council.

Professor Anthony Hollander, Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Research and Impact, attended the evening event held at Swinton Hall in Salford on Wednesday, 28 January.

Holocaust Memorial Day is marked annually on 27 January – the anniversary of the liberation at Auschwitz. The memorial event was organised to remember the millions of men, women and children who lost their lives in the Holocaust and to honour those who survived. It was also an opportunity to reflect on the discrimination and persecution still evident in today’s society and bring people together to promote peace and unity.

The evening included reflections from Alison Cooper, daughter of Holocaust survivor Judis Waxman (a Windermere child), who spoke about the importance of bridging generations – the theme for this year’s Holocaust Memorial Day. Other speakers included Salford City Mayor Paul Dennett and Samantha Lewkowicz from the Union of Jewish Students. Prayers and blessings closed the commemoration.

Professor Hollander joined University of Salford Vice-Chancellor, Professor Nic Beech and President and Vice-Chancellor of Manchester Metropolitan University, Professor Malcolm Press CBE at the event.

Reflecting on the evening, Professor Anthony Hollander, said: “It was an honour to represent the University of Liverpool at Salford’s Holocaust Memorial Day service, and to remember those who lost their lives and their futures to persecution in Nazi Germany. In a world that feels particularly turbulent, it’s more important than ever that we stand together, united against any form of antisemitism or racism. Liverpool is a city built on cultural diversity and as a University we are proud to welcome staff and students from all corners of the globe. We will continue to work to ensure everyone in our community feels supported, and that respect and understanding are at the heart of our shared values.”
