University unveils new look Repository for housing world-class research

The University has refreshed its Repository – a database which provides details and full-text of world-class University research outputs and electronic theses from across the institution.

The new-look Repository, which plays a significant role in maximising potential citation impact, will provide an improved user experience and enhanced discoverability for University research outputs.

Reasons for uploading outputs in the Repository

Recent research conducted by the University Library team has shown that research papers are more likely to be cited if they are available in an Open Access repository in comparison to a closed access publication. The data showed a strong correlation between the presence of a green Open Access version and citation impact. Research staff should upload their outputs as well as recommend their co-authors at other institutions to make versions of their papers available in their repositories. There is evidence to suggest that articles benefit from greater citation advantage if they are uploaded to more than one repository.

What can be uploaded

You can upload files for any research outputs where you have the rights to make them openly accessible. It is very important to note that our Research Publications and Copyright Policy ensures you always have the right to deposit the Author Accepted Manuscript version of your journal articles – that is, your own versions containing all changes made after peer review but not including publishing typesetting or branding. It is recommended that you only ever deposit this version of journal articles so we can be sure that what you have deposited can be made available.

Item types like research datasets (which would deposit to our separate Data Catalogue), reports, presentation materials, and others that have never been made available elsewhere can be deposited. During the process of creating a record for the item, you can request a DOI (Digital Object Identifier) to aid discoverability.

It is usually the case that the text of long form publications like monographs and edited collections cannot be deposited. Please check with the Open Access Team if you need further guidance.

How to upload research outputs

You can easily upload your work to the Repository through Liverpool Elements.  If there is already a record for your item in your Outputs Module, you just need to click the Deposit button next to the relevant item.

Who can access it

Access to research outputs and electronic theses in the Repository is available to everyone, not just people in the University. Users do not have to log in to view or download content, the search facility on the Repository home page allows you to locate specific outputs or you can browse, either ‘by Year‘ or ‘by Type‘.  Items in the Repository can also be accessed through links via Library Search or search engines, such as Google.

Full-text availability of research outputs via the Repository is principally through the Green Open Access (self-archiving) route. If you’d like to know more about Open Access please visit our dedicated webpages here.

If you cannot access an item or a record in the Repository it may be that it is confidential, embargoed or access is restricted for a specific period, in some cases, indefinitely. If you have any queries please contact the Open Research Team.
