The Accounting Paradox

How financial accounting is damaging the world (but can help repair it)

Author: Jeremy Nicholls
Published: 2026

When you think about the tools at our disposal to address the ecological, social and biodiversity challenges we face today, accounting might not immediately come to mind. And yet it is accounting standards, not science and not public policy, that set out how profit is calculated, which in turn drives investment decisions. What if we demanded that those standards reflect the true cost of business and its consequences?

Unless we look again at these fundamental principles, which have gone under the radar for so long, capital markets will continue to contribute to inequality, nature loss and climate change. What’s remarkable is that we already have in place everything we need for a more just and complete approach to accounting, and forward-thinking businesses are beginning to recognize that.

Jeremy Nicholls – accountant, sustainability professional, historian and activist – sets out a vision for new way of accounting, and it’s one that we can adopt immediately.

The Routledge International Handbook on Social Exclusion and Radicalisation

Authors: Tahir Abbas, Lianne Vostermans, Richard McNeil-Willson
Published: 2026

In a world marked by shifting paradigms and emergent challenges, The Routledge International Handbook on Social Exclusion and Radicalisation is a ground-breaking compilation that addresses the intricate relationship between social exclusion and radicalisation on a global scale.

In response to the prevailing tendency to examine radicalisation from single-level or individualistic perspectives, this handbook takes a comprehensive approach by embedding radicalisation within the broader context of socio-political, economic, and cultural dynamics of exclusion and marginalisation. It assembles leading scholars from a variety of fields to offer a well-rounded understanding of social exclusion as a precursor to radicalisation on a global scale. Drawing from a diverse array of theoretical frameworks employing both quantitative and qualitative methodologies, this handbook examines processes of radicalisation and social exclusion in the Global North and South, as well as comparative and international trends experienced worldwide.

This handbook will be a comprehensive resource for researchers and policy-makers seeking to understand the dynamics of radicalisation and for crafting evidence-based strategies aimed at fostering inclusion and pluralism. It will be of interest for scholars and students interested in understanding the complex levels of radicalisation and its social contexts from fields including sociology, political science, anthropology, social psychology, criminology, and international relations.

Susan Stebbing on Logic and Analysis

Author: Siobhan Chapman
Published: 2026

This volume presents a collection of newly commissioned essays on the work of Susan Stebbing (1885–1943). Stebbing was an important figure in the development of analytic philosophy in the first half of the twentieth century, and a pioneer of the social utility of philosophy and of the application of logical analysis to critical inquiry into language use. The separate studies of Stebbing’s work included in this volume offer fresh perspectives across three broad topics: logic and Cambridge Analysis; idealism, realism and the philosophy of science; and public philosophy and social engagement. The volume brings together seven chapters by leading international scholars in the field, along with a contextualising introduction, in order to advance understanding of the importance, originality and continuing significance of Stebbing’s remarkable body of work.

Susan Stebbing on Logic and analysis is essential reading for all scholars, researchers and advanced students of the history of analytic philosophy and the philosophy of science. It is also ideal for scholars interested in public philosophy.

Siobhan Chapman is Professor of English, School of the Arts, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences at the University of Liverpool.
