Varsity 2026: the pursuit continues after a decade of UoL dominance

Students playing american football in a varsity match

The countdown is on for Varsity 2026, as University of Liverpool student athletes prepare to represent their clubs across four days of competition from 12–15 April. Following last year’s success, Sport Liverpool are calling on students, alumni and supporters to once again get behind the teams in what promises to be another thrilling chapter in Varsity history.

Building on what has been described as a “decade of dominance” echoing the sustained success of the University of Liverpool in recent Varsity competitions, this year’s event offers another opportunity to extend that legacy.

A blockbuster opening at Wyncote

Varsity 2026 will begin in style on Saturday 12 April, with the opening fixture seeing American football take centre stage at Wyncote, kicking off at 2pm.

The opening fixture is expected to set the tone for the days ahead, bringing together players and supporters for an electric start to the competition.

Four days of competition

Across the Varsity schedule, teams from a wide range of sports will compete for pride, points, and the Varsity title. From indoor clashes to outdoor showdowns, every fixture contributes to the overall standings in what remains one of the most anticipated events in the student sporting calendar.

A fitting finale at Waterloo RFC

The competition will culminate on Tuesday 15 April, with the traditional showpiece finale: rugby union, kicking off at 7.30pm at Waterloo RFC.

As always, the closing fixture is expected to deliver drama, intensity, and a fitting end to four days of sport. The event will conclude with the Varsity trophy presentation, where the overall winners will lift the silverware in front of supporters.

Continuing the legacy

Varsity has long been a highlight of the university sporting calendar, bringing together competition, community, and tradition. With a decade of success already behind them, this year’s clubs now have the chance to build on that legacy and write the next chapter.

All eyes will be on April — as Varsity 2026 looks to deliver another unforgettable showcase of student sport. Who will win the Battle of the Blues – UoL or LJMU?
