A new report has been published today which highlights the University’s ongoing efforts to address key issues and confront the critical global sustainability challenges identified by the United Nations.
The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) represent a universal call to address the most urgent issues impacting humanity and the planet. Working in partnership both locally and globally, the University is tackling each of the SDGs through its research and knowledge exchange, education and student experience, and through its operations. The 2023 – 2024 Sustainable Development Goals report captures these efforts in alignment with the University’s values as set out in the strategic framework, Liverpool 2031.
Key highlights from the report
The report emphasises the University’s unique commitments to each of the 17 SDGs over the past year, with additional case studies available on our website. The report highlights pioneering research driving the UK’s transition to clean, affordable energy, and explores how Liverpool’s research can shape future policy, governance, and innovation to tackle the global climate crisis. The report also highlights the role of the University’s cultural institutions in engaging the public with the goals, and how, through our, estate, and financial operations, we contribute to sustainable development.
The report is intended for a diverse audience, including local, national, and international stakeholders across the public, private, NGO, policy, and education sectors. We hope it inspires new ideas, actions, and opportunities for collaboration and partnership, enabling us all to contribute meaningfully to achieving the world’s SDGs by 2030.
Looking ahead
The Sustainable Development Goals report 2023-24 builds on the University’s first Sustainability Strategy, published in 2021, which has already driven significant progress towards the SDGs. Now, following the introduction of the Liverpool 2031 framework, our new Sustainability Strategy is set to be unveiled next week.
The launch of the new Interdisciplinary Centre for Sustainability Research is another key development out of Liverpool 2031 that will drive forward sustainable development by convening researchers from different disciplines to tackle the SDGs, beginning with the climate-related goals.
