Try Active Liverpool’s new Wave X Classes at the campus pool

Wave X at Active Liverpool

We’re thrilled to announce a brand-new addition to our facilities. Active Liverpool is the first university in the UK to launch the innovative floating fitness classes in partnership with WaveX. This fresh addition to our timetable marks a significant step in offering students, staff and the local community an entirely new way to engage with aquatic fitness.

What is WaveX?

WaveX is a revolutionary fitness concept that takes you out of the studio and onto the water. The workout is delivered on specially designed floating mats, combining core strength, balance and mindful movement on water. WaveX workouts offer 3 key benefits including:

  • Core and balance challenge: Working on a floating mat forces the body to stabilise and use deeper muscle groups.
  • Low impact, high engagement: The water environment reduces joint stress, yet the movement of the base keeps you working hard.
  • Mind-body and community focus: Beyond physical fitness, WaveX cultivates a mindful movement approach and communal workout experience.

Why Wave X?

At Active Liverpool we pride ourselves on offering best-in-class facilities and programmes — whether you’re lifting in the gym, swimming in the pool or finding your calm in a wellness class. Through our partnership with WaveX we’re introducing something uniquely experiential and forward-thinking:

  • We’re leading the way – being the first UK university to deliver WaveX positions us at the forefront of innovation in university sport and wellbeing.
  • It broadens our offer for all fitness levels: Whether you’re totally new to fitness or experienced.
  • It aligns with our holistic health mission: Combining physical, mental and social wellbeing in one session.
  • It enhances our aquatic offering: Our main pool timetable already lists WaveX sessions — a clear signal of our commitment to diversifying our aquatic programme.

What to expect & how to join

  • Sessions are scheduled in our Sports & Fitness Centre pool.
  • Each session is 45 minutes long but this includes a 15-minute set-up period. The exercise class is 30 minutes in length.
  • WaveX is FREE for all — so you can give WaveX a go without commitment.
  • Booking will be available via the WaveX booking system — we recommend early reservation as spaces will be limited (due to pool layout and equipment).
  • What to bring: swimwear + towel + water bottle, plenty of enthusiasm and don’t be afraid to fall in the water! (We recommend wearing shorts/leggings/t-shirt over your swimwear)

Ryan Swinney, our Sport Development officer, said “We are always looking for new innovative ways to get active. WaveX brings a new fresh dynamic to our fitness offer. It reflects our ongoing ambition to create exciting and modern fitness experiences for our students, staff and local community.”

Book your place

  • Book onto a WaveX class through our pool timetable or through WaveX.
  • Share your experience – we’d love to hear how you found the workout, what you liked, and how it made you feel.
