Four University of Liverpool professors from the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences have been awarded the prestigious National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) Senior Investigator Award.
The four Senior Investigators are recognised as leading experts in their fields, known for their outstanding contributions to research and their influence in shaping the future of health and care. The award provides funding to support their research while they undertake a senior leadership role within the NIHR, helping to shape national strategy and policy.
The four researchers named in the NIHR Senior Investigators cohort are:
- Professor Michael Jenkinson, Professor of Neurosurgery and Sir John Fisher Foundation / RCS England Chair of Surgical Trials from the University of Liverpool’s Department of Pharmacology and Therapeutics and Consultant Neurosurgeon at The Walton Centre.
- Professor Tony Marson, Professor of Neurology and Dean of the Institute of Systems, Molecular and Integrative Biology. Professor Marson leads the Liverpool Epilepsy Research Group and is an Honorary Consultant Neurologist at The Walton Centre. Professor Marson has been reappointed this year.
- Professor Sarah Rodgers, a Professor of Health Informatics from the Department of Public Health, Policy & Systems, with expertise in evaluating natural experiments and non-randomised intervention studies using anonymised linked administrative and health datasets.
- Professor Andrew Weeks, Professor of International Maternal Health, Andrew Weeks’ primary interest is improving birth outcomes for mother and baby in both high- and low-income settings. Professor Weeks has been reappointed this year.
Senior Investigators act as ambassadors for the NIHR, playing a pivotal role in developing research capacity, mentoring future leaders, and influencing policy at a national level. They work closely with the NIHR and the Department of Health and Social Care, helping to shape the direction of health and care research in the UK and beyond.
