Vice Chancellor’s Engineering Fellowships open for applications

As we approach our 150th anniversary, we are seeking exceptional researchers to join us as Vice-Chancellor’s Engineering Fellows and help shape the future of engineering research and innovation.

We invite applications from ambitious researchers with bold ideas, outstanding potential and the drive to become established leaders in their fields. Based within our internationally-renowned Faculty of Science and Engineering, these prestigious five-year fellowships provide a unique platform to launch an independent, world-leading research career.

Fellows will have the opportunity to build internationally excellent research programmes, forge influential partnerships across academia, industry and government, and translate pioneering research into lasting scientific, economic, environmental and societal impact. We are particularly interested in proposals that align with UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) priorities and support the ambitions of the UK Modern Industrial Strategy.

We welcome applications across a broad spectrum of engineering research, including:

  • Advanced materials and manufacturing
  • Intelligent and autonomous systems
  • Energy, aerospace and future mobility
  • Maritime, infrastructure and environmental resilience
  • Chemical and process engineering
  • Biomedical engineering and engineering biology
  • Defence, security and resilient systems.

These areas are intended as a guide rather than a constraint, and we strongly encourage exceptional, innovative proposals that push the boundaries of our existing strengths.

More than a recognition of past achievement, these fellowships are an investment in future leadership. We are looking for researchers with the vision, creativity and determination to tackle major global challenges and establish themselves at the forefront of their disciplines.

Vice Chancellor Professor Tim Jones said:
“As we look to build on 150 years of innovation and impact, these fellowships represent an investment in the next generation of engineering pioneers. We are looking for talented researchers with the imagination, ambition and determination to push the boundaries of knowledge and address some of the most pressing challenges facing society today. Through these fellowships, we will provide the support, environment and global connections needed for exceptional researchers to thrive and make a lasting difference.”

Faculty of Science and Engineering Pro Vice Chancellor Professor Laura Harkness said: “Our Faculty has a proud tradition of engineering excellence, underpinned by world-class facilities, interdisciplinary collaboration and strong partnerships with industry and government. These fellowships offer an exceptional opportunity for emerging research leaders to establish ambitious programmes, develop their international profile and help shape the future of engineering research and innovation.”

Applicants will typically have at least three years of postdoctoral, or equivalent research-intensive experience, including experience gained beyond higher education. We welcome applications from talented researchers across diverse disciplines, sectors and career pathways. Current holders of personal fellowships are also encouraged to apply.  The deadline for applications will be 11.30 pm on Monday 30 November 2026.
