Call to attend event to raise awareness of meningitis

Viral meningitis is responsible for 3,000 cases per year in the UK

Researchers at the University are hosting a public awareness event to report on the latest research into the causes and effects of viral meningitis.

At the event, researchers will look at the latest results of studies investigating the prevalence of viral meningitis, treatment outcomes, and why some people get recurrent episodes of the virus.  Compared to bacterial meningitis, much less is known about the causes and effects of viral meningitis, although it is thought to be responsible for more than 3,000 cases of meningitis a year in the UK.

The University’s Brain Infections Group, at the Institute of Infection and Global Health, are working with the Meningitis Research Foundation and a number of hospitals in the region to further understanding about the condition.

Professor Tom Solomon, Head of the University’s Institute of Infection and Global Health, said: “Current research shows that we are aware of some of the viruses that cause meningitis but many patients remain without a specific diagnosis and very little research has been done looking at viral meningitis compared to bacterial.

“Our research will try to find out exactly how big the problem is and what effects viral meningitis has on people following an acute episode of meningitis.  We will also be looking at ways to improve the diagnosis and, in the future, looking at treatments for certain types of viral meningitis.”

The meningitis awareness event will take place at the University’s Apex Building, Crown Street, on Tuesday, 3 July.

The event is free and members of the public can register their attendance on the day or by contacting Dr Fiona McGill beforehand on 0151 795 9606 or email mennw@liv.ac.uk
