The University is about to open its £45 million student accommodation complex which is at the cutting edge of sustainable accommodation in the higher education sector.

Vine Court is a student residential development at the heart of the University’s campus on Chatham Street and features shops, a 250-seat restaurant and 749 en suite student bedrooms. In keeping with the University’s sustainability agenda, the residences benefit from a low energy heating and cooling system, rainwater harvesting, low energy lighting and solar thermal water heating. The development also features green roofs for wildlife habitats.

The University’s Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Student Experience, Professor Kelvin Everest, said: “The whole experience we offer to students at Liverpool is world-class. We have made this investment because we want to maintain the calibre of the students we attract to Liverpool and ensure the quality of our accommodation matches the excellence of our teaching provision.

“We know there is a significant demand for more high quality accommodation at our city centre campus at Liverpool. Our new eco-residences are at the forefront of sustainable residential development in the UK higher education sector and will enable us to offer much more of the accommodation students want from a leading university.”

The development is part of an overall £250 million investment in student accommodation and will open to students beginning their studies at the University in September. The institution has also been awarded planning permission to develop additional student accommodation on Brownlow Hill and Crown Street. The £65 million development will comprise 1,259 en-suite rooms as well as retail outlets. Featuring two striking glass towers nine storeys high, the scheme will be located on a prominent gateway to Liverpool’s ‘Knowledge Quarter’.

As well as refurbishing existing accommodation, the University is also developing new residences at its Mulberry Court and Great Newton sites, providing state-of-the art accommodation and further increasing the number of student rooms available on-campus.

The University is also investing in its off-campus accommodation, developing new residences at its Greenbank site at Mossley Hill to provide a self-contained student village including catering and sports facilities. The University’s historic 18th Century Greenbank House which was left to the University by the Rathbone family, is also set to benefit from a £5 million investment.
